Haven’t posted these for a while. I’ve been growing on baby cormlets of the Saffron Crocus. Seems they require quite a different technique to other crocus, and was advised they need to be planted v. deep - these are in a tall deep narrow pot and planted six inches deep. They are already twice the size from last year and I’ll repot after this season, whilst I’ve also been feeding them every month.

They are lovely when they flower. You’ll need to get them early Jane as they are autumn flowering, maybe start looking from July/August, they’ll then be in flower quite soon after you plant them. @pelly

Thanks Sharon! 😊 yeah, it’s unfortunate they take time but hoping in the future I’ll have more corms than I started with. Although sometimes I wonder if it’s just simpler to buy new ones lol! @sharonhayden

A friend suggested they get weaker in colour and strength after a few years 🤷🏻‍♀️

Brilliant, thanks for the advice Rich 😍👍

I think it’s probably because the main corn rots off mostly in this country, and you are then left with tiny cormlets that seldom survive. I’ve picked these out to hopefully grow to flowering size, but if they don’t do much by next year I might just throw them away @sharonhayden

This one does @gjones 😀, also known as the autumn Crocus. The other types of Crocus will flower in spring.

Indeed @katgreen, I think I'd need quite a few bulbs to consider growing it to harvest. As you only get three stigmas per flower

How do you get your labels. Typewritten Richard?

Hi @laura - apologies as just seen your comment. I bought a fancy label printer made by 'Brother' off Amazon. It produces the label and then I stick it to a normal plastic label for support 😬 - still getting used to it but it's supposed to be better long term as I find the pen written labels fade too quickly 👍🏼
