Weigela 'Wine and Roses'

Weigela is a species of hardy deciduous shrubs. They are among the most popular summer-flowering shrubs. They bear small foxglove-like flowers in clusters on the previous seasons wood during early summer. Weigela Florida 'Wine & Roses®' has purple-bronze leaves and bright pink flowers, which are attractive to bees and butterflies.

A stunning spring-flowering shrub, they bear small foxglove-like flowers in clusters on the previous seasons wood during late Spring and early Summer.

 

Planting season

From Mid Autumn TO Early Summer

Plant out pot grown plants in full sun or partial shade. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Weigela at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

 

Propagation by cuttings

From Early Summer TO Mid Summer

Semi hard wood cuttings are taken from the current years growth from late summer to mid autumn the bottom of the cuttings is hard and soft on the top. With a sharp knife take a cutting of about 14 cms, remove lowest leaves, dip end into rooting hormone, and place round the edge of a pot filled with a suitable compost, water well, they must remain moist till rooted, place under glass but in semi shade.

Take hardwood cuttings of up to .3m from this years growth, making a clean from above a shoot and remove any soft growth. Nearly fill a container with fine grit at the bottom, to enable free draining, and a suitable compost. Place the cutting, having dipped he end in a rooting compound first, with a third of the cutting showing.
