Prunus domestica subsp. italica 'Old Greengage'

Greengage 'Old Greengage'

Greengages are a group of cultivars of the common European plum. Greengage fruit are usually smaller than plums, have light green flesh, with yellow to green coloured skins, and are considered to be among the finest dessert plums.'Old Green Gage' was described by Victorian fruit enthusiast Robert Hogg as "tender, melting, and very juicy, with a rich, sugary and most delicious flavour", whilst H.V. Taylor in 'The Plums of England' (1949) rates it as "For all purposes unsurpassed". The fruit are quite small, and dull green in colour, turning a bit yellow when ripe, but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in flavour

Flowering

From Late Winter TO Mid Spring

Although plum trees are frost hardy, the flowers - essential for fruiting - are very susceptible to frost. If frost is threatened during the flowering period, protect the flowers with horticultural fleece.

Planting

From Late Autumn TO Mid Winter

Plant plum trees in the dormant season, in a sheltered position where the tree will get plenty of sunshine. Dig a large hole, and put a good amount of organic material in the bottom of the hole to help with drainage.
