Hedychium coronarium
White Ginger Lily
Ginger Lilies are flowering, perennial, rhizomatous plants with stout, reed-like stems which carry lanceolate sheathing leaves in two parallel ranks. The stems are topped with spikes of orchid-like flowers that are often fragrant. Gingers vary from frost hardy to tender green-house or conservatory plants, and protection from cold will help even hardy varieties to flower, so a solution in cold areas is to grow in containers, and move the containers outdoors in the warmer months. Wet conditions are sometimes a worse enemy than cold, so make sure the plants are going to be protected from very wet conditions, and that the soil in which they are grown is very free-draining. Hedychium coronarium has lush lance-shaped foliage typical of its genus, and large white fragrant flowers. It is however, not the easiest Hedychium to get to flower in the UK and needs a lot of light, high Summer heat, plenty of water and regular feeding throughout the growing season
