Brachypodium sylvaticum syn. Festuca sylvatica

Slender False Brome

Brachypodium sylvaticum is a tufted perfennial grass which is native to many parts of Europe, across into Asia and parts of America. It has slender green grass like or blade like foliage rising to approximately 30cm, and then tall flower stems rise up and arch over and flowers droop over, followed by seed heads. It typically prefers shadier conditions and can be found in the wild in areas of woodland scrub, hedgerows, or in more open areas that used to be woodland. It prefers a well draining soil. It is thought to be an important food source for some butterfly caterpillars.

Flowering Season (Summer/Autumn)

From Mid Summer TO Mid Autumn

Brachypodium sylvaticam typically flowers in the later part of the year with flower stems emerging between July and October, where it sends up tall slender stems up to 90cm tall which arch and droop over.

Propagate by Seed

From Early Spring TO Early Winter

Brachypodium sylvaticum spreads in nature easily via self seeding, where seeds drop in late autumn from the tall arching stems and germinate in the spring. It does best when sown where it is to grow, and is often sown as part of a mixture of grasses in a shade mixture. It will not tolerate deep shade, so only sow in partial shaded area where it can receive some light. Seed can be sown at most times of the year when conditions are suitable for germination, so soil is moist and when soil temperatures are above 5 degrees centigrade. It is best to avoid too cold or wintry conditions.

Planting Season (Spring)

From Early Spring TO Late Spring

Plant container grown plants out in spring. This plant prefers well draining soil, in partial shade but will tolerate more open positions providing it doesn't dry out too much.
