#dicksonia-antarctica has enjoyed the rain the last couple of days. This was a late starter this year as have many of my plants but after seeing the devastation caused to many from the late May frost, I'm very glad it hadn't started unfurling until recently

#dicksonia-antarctica @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co It's not looking too bad, there are knuckles there waiting to erupt

Its way better than mine julie. All mine were black before January. Ive been struggling all week putting anything up. I think the internet is about to blow up 😂🥴

5w
comment
vec

I didn't cover mine at all this year, I just stuffed a bit of fleece in the crown. I live in a terrible frost pocket so I'm really shocked at how they've come through @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co

pelly

Yes, I can see it now and it's fabulous Julie 💚 I think it's the app, mine keeps freezing 🤔

5w
comment
davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co

@vec i think people are over cautious with them julie. On seagrave nurseries website where i get mine from, they say their ok to -7 with no protection, i just go a bit cautiously.

Adore these. Bought a 2 litre one from T&M reckon it'll take some years to grow though. Mines in pot but thinking in straight in the ground.

It was bought (as a gift by Mr vec) early last year @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co Think it was 3ft

@cazx I think I read that it grows about a foot every 10 years 😮

If its anything like mine julie they seem to produce more fronds each year. Do you feed it ? I start to feed mine in the second year, which seems to bring them on well.

Yes occasional liquid seaweed @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co

Hoo @vec when did you cut the fronds off? I'm yet to do mine, it's currently housed in the greenhouse but can't see any news ones coming through. What should I do ? Help! 🤷🏽‍♀️

6w
comment
vec

This week @Cazx but the advice I was given was not to go too low as it will close the crown up and prevent the knuckles from unfurling. I'm keeping a bit of fleece at hand to shove in the crown in case we have frost forecast. I have been watering mine for a while as it was so dry

#dicksonia-antarctica #foliagefriday It's been a beautiful day here today and very productive. Tip run done of all the greenhouse boxes and wooden frame for the concrete base. Potted up my tulips 🌷🌷🌷 Lots of cutting back and deadheading and one full green bin. Anyone else find cutting back plants therapeutic or am I odd 😂

@valjones-hughes From what I'm told, the more sun it has the more water you give it. Mine is in sun until 4pm and has at least one full watering can a day. Drench the top and soak the trunk ☺

7w
comment
vec

@debrascott yes the roots are in the trunk. Mine is only buried about 10cm into the soil for stability. I've seen lots of different opinions on feeding. Liquid seaweed is recommended but I feed my big plants (bananas and palms) with tomato feed so that's what it will get 😂

7w
comment
vec

Mine is only a 2 foot trunk @juliesgarden I would have loved a bigger one but can't unless I have a lottery win or see a reduced one at the end of the season 😉
