Hae there Theresa and Judy. Love the lufa. I'm still trying at these. Of the 6 seeds I showed in December, one plant is surviving. I had seeds from both of you germinate. Now I'm trying my last 3 seeds on the propagator. I hope they pop! @ripjuju

I'm good. I've got a few seeds left to direct sow, I didn't realize that! I may use one of those water jug green houses so they have a fast start. Fun to be had!

@cyndi this hurricane is a beast! would rather be anywhere but in the middle of FL when it hits, if it does make it up to Georgia, it will have slowed down some! It's my hope anyway! You may get effects from this as well :( keep safe yourself! There is another right behind Irma...Monday is when we will know for sure 😰😕😯✌

gjones

We've grown other gourds but haven't tried these. How big will they get?

5w
comment
treefrog44

@gjones these are about 15" long...they can get up to 2 1/2 ft long 4-7" in diameter

5w
comment
gjones

So do you dry them and extract the luffa or just grow them as Ornamental?

5w
comment
treefrog44

@gjones When the gourds start turning yellow/brown I pick them, sometimes they will fall off green from the weight, when they are completely dry peel the outer skin off, the luffa is the dry fiber inside, the seeds are in the center. Usually you can shake them all out. You can use them as scrubbies, or as a bath/body scrubber, like the ones you buy in the store 😆

gjones

We knew what luffa was, we were just curious to know how and if you extracted it😊

@bpetty55 it's an actual luffa that's sold as a bath sponge! It grows as a gourd, when it dries, you peel the outer layer, inside is the luffa sponge! 😉
