The deer ripped off a 2-foot stick of scion wood from the Susquehanna pawpaw, so in an attempt to make lemonade from lemons, I grafted a piece of it into a #seedling #pawpaw I had in a pot. I'm keeping it indoors now to try and trick it into making some new growth, thereby preserving this variety for the future. It's an #experiment. 29 Sep 2024 #alwayslearning #hopehopehope

A deer got into the fenced backyard last night because the gate was left open. It munched off most of my #purslane. I was MAD. Then tonight when I was watering, I looked at the pot again and noticed some new baby #pawpaw #seedlings tucked in there among the purslane. This makes me so happy because I put about a hundred pawpaw seeds in this pot and then they didn't make it through the winter so I felt like a failure and a waster of precious pawpaw seeds. But some have LIVED! yaaaaaaaaay!

Time will tell whether this was a good decision or not. The two trunks branch off at such an acute angle that water could collect there and rot the wood. With a heavy load of fruit, it's possible that the two trunks will split apart someday. Hopefully they'll stay long enough that I can collect more scion before that happens. 10 Aug 2024

Some late-season grafting today. This tree's graft died the year before last, so I decided to give it another shot. After the graft died, it sprouted two new shoots from the roots, so I grafted both. At this year's #backyardfruitgrowers grafting workshop one of the experienced growers told me that he always tries to keep the tip of a piece of scion intact whenever possible, because the terminal bud has a lot of growth hormone in it and will make the plant do well. I decided to try it, but the tip of the stick was too thin for the rootstock, so I grafted further down and ended up with 7 or 8 buds above the graft.

15w

Wasn't sure if that many buds above a graft is a good thing or not -- I was taught to use only 2 or 3 -- but it was already pushing leaves before I had a chance to ask anyone about it. 28 June 2024 #native #nativeplant #edible #ediblelandscaping #grafted #graftyourown #backyardfruitgrowers #byfg #tedweeden

I use the whip-and-tongue graft. I have a really sharp knife, and clippers that I wipe with alcohol between cuts. I match up the diameter of the rootstock and scion and then wrap the graft union with buddy tape. The tape is a biodegradable stretchable film, kinda waxy and breathable and soft enough that new leaves can push their way through. @terrimclaughlin

This is the area we call "the meadow" where we planted the first pawpaw trees. This was taken at 12:47 pm on 23 Oct 2023 and two of the trees are already in shade. It's partly from the time of year and partly because of a huge bittersweet vine behind me that's helping to cast such a huge shadow. I'm going to cut it down next weekend, and hopefully next summer there will be more sunlight for the pawpaws.

Planted 3 of my #pawpaw trees this afternoon with my hubby, sisters in law, and niece. We encountered a bunch of big rocks about 6" down and the ground was really soggy and mushy from yesterday's rain. In the next few days I'll cover the landscape fabric with wood chips. 15 Oct 2023

My Wabash grafted rootsucker pawpaw's trunk is as thick as my thumb now. The one next to it is another one whose graft failed, but it'll do fine as a pollinator for the Wabash, or maybe I'll attempt to graft it again in the future. 7 Oct 2023 #pawpaw #asiminatriloba #graftyourown #native #nativeplant #grafted

There are now five big branches growing out of the trunk of the wild pawpaw that the bucks rubbed to bits last fall. The graft I tried last year never worked, but still it has recovered amazingly well. It's fenced now to prevent this year's bucks from being tempted. 2 Sep 2023 #asiminatriloba #pawpaw

The big leaves are a hefty #pawpaw root sucker popping up under the low branches of an evergreen and fighting for light. I'm thinking of cutting back the evergreen after all the leaves have fallen and the pawpaw is dormant so it can get more sun next season. I'll have to put up some deer deterrent though to replace what the evergreen is doing. 2 Sep 2023 #plans #observation

I read yesterday on a Facebook pawpaw group that #seedling #pawpaw need to be protected from rabbits. And I wake up to this. My biggest seedling with three leaves got munched! 😠 There's another baby sprouting up in the background, so that makes four so far. The munched one will grow back but I'm still mad. 7 Aug 2022 #asiminatriloba #native #treesfromseeds

@sushiwaitress cam you explain the reasons for grafting them at all? I know you graft apples to bring a tired tree back to life, but what does it do for a pawpaw?

3w
comment
sushiwaitress

I saved seeds from pawpaws I ate and grew these small trees. Their fruit won't be the same as their parent tree, and they're unlikely to be as good as cultivated varieties. So I got wood from the cultivated varieties so I can have the best fruit. It's basically cloning. @emch

3w
comment
richard.spicer.7906

@emch - Most apples are actually grafted to suit a desirable rootstock - if you grow them on their own roots, most will be too vigorous, or not hardy or not suitable long term. Various rootstocks have been developed to suit different end size trees and control the vigour. Similarly with pears and other fruits. Not sure about pawpaw but another reason is usually that you’ll get a fruiting tree much quicker from grafting. @sushiwaitress , what was the rootstock in your case - a straight species?

3w
comment
richard.spicer.7906

Some rootstocks also help prevent certain diseases 👍🏼

3w
comment
sushiwaitress

@richard.spicer.7906 I just grew a pawpaw from seed and used the seedling tree as the rootstock. There really aren't different rootstocks for pawpaw. And you're right, grafted trees bear fruit a few years earlier than trees from seed.

It's going to be 28°F tonight (which is cold in America) so I brought in the #pawpaw #seedling trees too. 19 Nov 2021 #asiminatriloba #native #treesfromseeds #nativetree

Is it nessecary to overwinter them indoors? Pawpaw are quite cold hardy. They should be able to handle temps well below 0

3w

referee101

They are decideous so will drop all their leaves and bud out in Spring

3w

It shouldn't be necessary to overwinter them indoors, but they are in tall treepots and I'm worried the roots won't have enough insulation because they aren't planted in the ground. This is just temporary until I re-watch a video from a grower I know. @referee101

That makes sense :) we dont experience frost here at all. The lowes the temps drops might be 5 or 6 degrees celcuis ( 41 - 45 degrees farenheit.) but that rarely happens. average is around 10 in winter.

I've got a pdf document that I got from somewhere focusing on Fruit trees and other edibles specifically for areas that experience frost. Cant remember How I got it though. Would like to send it to you. Theres some interesting info in there with some rare fruit. You might find it interesting.

Aha. I found info on caring for potted pawpaw trees during the winter from Kentucky State University (where there is the only pawpaw research department) and it turns out that keeping them from freezing while they're potted is pretty important! Much hardier in-ground. https://m.facebook.com/ksu.pawpaw/posts/3815715388460375?locale2=sw_KE #advice

So this one grew from a root sucker?

3w

sushiwaitress

@referee101 yes it did, in my neighbor's yard. He dug it up and I planted it in my yard. Not sure if it'll make it, because pawpaw transplants don't usually work (so I've heard). It's an experiment to keep me entertained until the seedlings get big.

Nice! I assume thats where you got the seeds / seedlings from? I see the permaculture bug got to you too😄 You should look up the gardening channel on youtube and look at what James accomplished in New Jersey.

My neighbor's trees have never fruited! It's such a tragedy! I saved my seeds from pawpaws I bought last year. @referee101 I want to meet James and Tuck and visit them someday! It was their pawpaw video that got me started.

3w

referee101

If he only have one tree then it wont set fruit. He needs 2 trees that are genetically different. Growing them from seed produces genetically different trees. If you plant your then someday his might set fruit

3w
comment
sushiwaitress

It's so crazy @referee101 because he has two trees that he grew from seed. They are definitely big enough to fruit AND they had buds last spring. Maybe he'll have to hand pollinate them. Being a root sucker, mine is a clone of his. But I'm going to get us some scion wood this spring and maybe in a couple more years we'll both have fruit.

3w
comment
referee101

I heard Paw paw can take 8 - 9 years to fruit if grown from seed.

3w
comment
sushiwaitress

@referee101 it's possible that's the reason. I can't remember how old his are. I'm going to graft my seedlings, which has the added benefit of making them fruit a couple years sooner.

3w
comment
referee101

@sushiwaitress You are lucky if you can get scions. I'm the only person in my country with paw paw seedlings atm. 😅

3w
comment
referee101

I forgot to mention , Bees aren't you're usual pollinators for these trees. Beetles, fly's and ant are. If you lack any of those in you're area then you might need to consider hand pollinating flowers.

About 3-4 years old - I started them from seeds of Pawpaws that I ate. 2 from Columbus, Ohio and one from Athens, Ohio. My trees are all unrelated, this ensures fruit later on. I planted them in my backyard in Medina, NY.

I'd saved #pawpaw seeds from last fall, kept them in the fridge all winter and then dumped them all in a pot of soil and put them on a warming mat in the grow tent for 6 weeks. Shook some sprouted seeds out of the pot today and put them into their separate 14"x4" stuewe treepots. 3 Apr 2021 #asiminatriloba #seedling #weekendproject

Baby #pawpaw need shade for the first couple years, but they need full sun to fruit. So i built myself a tree shelter out of some wire caging/fencing material that my neighbor put out for the trash and which I scrounged just in time before the garbage truck came. I had an old XL t-shirt that I won't wear in public, so I cut it down the side and hooked it on with twist ties #reuse #recycle 27 Mar 2021 #repurpose
