#grafting the last of my #pawpaw #seedlings -- the trick is a long shallow diagonal cut (whip graft) and matching up the green cambium layers of the rootstock and scion. Wrap tightly with biodegradable grafting tape to seal in moisture and keep in a warm location to promote faster healing. Hope it works!!! 27 Mar 2022

@sushiwaitress cam you explain the reasons for grafting them at all? I know you graft apples to bring a tired tree back to life, but what does it do for a pawpaw?

1w
comment
sushiwaitress

I saved seeds from pawpaws I ate and grew these small trees. Their fruit won't be the same as their parent tree, and they're unlikely to be as good as cultivated varieties. So I got wood from the cultivated varieties so I can have the best fruit. It's basically cloning. @emch

richard.spicer.7906

@emch - Most apples are actually grafted to suit a desirable rootstock - if you grow them on their own roots, most will be too vigorous, or not hardy or not suitable long term. Various rootstocks have been developed to suit different end size trees and control the vigour. Similarly with pears and other fruits. Not sure about pawpaw but another reason is usually that you’ll get a fruiting tree much quicker from grafting. @sushiwaitress , what was the rootstock in your case - a straight species?

1w

richard.spicer.7906

Some rootstocks also help prevent certain diseases 👍🏼

1w
comment
sushiwaitress

@richard.spicer.7906 I just grew a pawpaw from seed and used the seedling tree as the rootstock. There really aren't different rootstocks for pawpaw. And you're right, grafted trees bear fruit a few years earlier than trees from seed.

Trying a new technique to #germinate pawpaw seeds. It's late March and I should have started this in January, but better late than never. This is an aluminum foil baking pan from the grocery store and the cheapest #heatmat I could find on Amazon. I cover the pan with cardboard from the recycling to keep the moisture in. Should have germination in one more week. 20 Mar 2022 #seedsowing #seedstarting

Is it nessecary to overwinter them indoors? Pawpaw are quite cold hardy. They should be able to handle temps well below 0

1w

They are decideous so will drop all their leaves and bud out in Spring

1w

It shouldn't be necessary to overwinter them indoors, but they are in tall treepots and I'm worried the roots won't have enough insulation because they aren't planted in the ground. This is just temporary until I re-watch a video from a grower I know. @referee101

That makes sense :) we dont experience frost here at all. The lowes the temps drops might be 5 or 6 degrees celcuis ( 41 - 45 degrees farenheit.) but that rarely happens. average is around 10 in winter.

If he only have one tree then it wont set fruit. He needs 2 trees that are genetically different. Growing them from seed produces genetically different trees. If you plant your then someday his might set fruit

1w

It's so crazy @referee101 because he has two trees that he grew from seed. They are definitely big enough to fruit AND they had buds last spring. Maybe he'll have to hand pollinate them. Being a root sucker, mine is a clone of his. But I'm going to get us some scion wood this spring and maybe in a couple more years we'll both have fruit.

1w
comment
referee101

I heard Paw paw can take 8 - 9 years to fruit if grown from seed.

1w
comment
sushiwaitress

@referee101 it's possible that's the reason. I can't remember how old his are. I'm going to graft my seedlings, which has the added benefit of making them fruit a couple years sooner.

@sushiwaitress You are lucky if you can get scions. I'm the only person in my country with paw paw seedlings atm. 😅

1w

I forgot to mention , Bees aren't you're usual pollinators for these trees. Beetles, fly's and ant are. If you lack any of those in you're area then you might need to consider hand pollinating flowers.
