19/02/19 - Dwarf Iris Update - Iris reticulata ‘Mars Landing’ , third flower this year which is a bonus as I really didn’t think I would get many at all considering its their second year flowering. When I repotted them there didn’t appear to be many flowering size bulbs left, but as you can see there are plenty of bulblets. Been feeding every 2-3 weeks with tomato feed. Love the colour that it develops as the flower begins to open 💛💚 #iris #iris-reticulata #irisreticulatamarslanding

Fantastic colours and well done for getting them to flower 😊👍 My 4th year Harmony are no show this year (healthy foliage but no flowers) which I sort of expected after the summer we had last year.

I’m quite pleased too Urszula 😄, I think this was the best bloom out of all of this years from this pot. Hopefully you’ll get Harmony back blooming next year 🤞🏼 @ublaszko

Oh hello 👋🏼 where did you spring from? I really didn’t think this would flower again this year as most of last year’s bulbs died off and produced bulblets. Maybe there was still one of flowering size that I missed when I repotted them. Definitely a smaller bloom than last year though. Will continue to feed every two weeks with dilute tomatorite 👍🏼

Maybe Urszula 🤔 they do like a baking, but too much that they dry out completely. I did move the pots last spring too after flowering and put in part shade so as not to cook them 😂 - I’ve done that before in a previous year, I forget how hot the soil can get in a small clay pot! @ublaszko

It does Kathy, plus there are a couple of others coming up next to it but I’m sure they will just be foliage @kathy

@richard.spicer.7906 where do you purchase your bulbs?

Hi @janetandjim - I use a few different online sources in the UK depending on genus. Most of my Iris reticulata bulbs come from Jacque Amand Int (https://jacquesamandintl.com), and Crocus I’ve mostly used RV Rogers (http://www.rvroger.co.uk/index.php?ls=fp) but there’s many others too such as Avon Bulbs, Ashwood Nurseries, Cornovium Snowdrops, Broadleigh Nurseries. I get a few at a number of the flower and plant shows throughout the year.

The last flower of Iris reticulata ‘Mars Landing’ - moving them into the sun has definitely helped them change colour from when they first opened. But still not yet sure if it truly is the right variety if you compare it to other photos online. The breeder did highlight to me that iris reticulatas can vary sometimes between growing environments, and I can’t find any other variety like this. For now, I’ll keep it labelled as Mars Landing. #iris #iris-reticulata #irisreticulatamarslanding

Indeed @Cyndi, I love it too - absolutely my favourite. It will be interesting to see if the colour remains the same next year. It’s tempting to buy a second batch of bulbs from a different supplier to see if I get the same result.

That's interesting about the colour change! I've been wondering whether my iris reticulata 'Harmony' was mislabeled because in the 1st year they were royal blue, in the 2nd year pastel purple and this year rich purple. Now I know it must be related to the amount of sun they were getting because the same year they were turned pastel shades some bulbs failed to flower completely 😆

That's interesting @ublaszko - I've wondered about this a lot recently with some of my bulbs. Maybe I need to do a little scientific experiment 🤓

I've only noticed it with these dwarf irises so far but now I'm wondering if it would apply to Dutch irises. I didn't really like the colour of the latter last year so I potted them up and they get somewhat less sun.

Iris reticulata 'Mars Landing' - Still not sure these are the colour they were supposed to be, but I shall not be seeking a refund cuz I love 'em!! 😍 and very unusual colouring. I must admit since moving them into the sun they are going deeper bronze colour in the centre #iris #iris-reticulata #irisreticulatamarslanding

This one is a new one for me - Iris reticulata ‘Mars Landing’ , although I’m a bit cautious for now as this lone one is miles ahead of the others in the same pot so I might have a stow away 😂 - it looks like it will have green edges rather than a wine/brown colour 🤔 #iris #iris-reticulata - will add it to database later #irisreticulatamarslanding

It is Cyndi - it’s opened now, although def not the colour I was expecting. But it’s still lovely. I’ll post a photo of it. @cyndi
