My hyacinths have started to bloom, and the good news is they are the right colour! 💜 the bad news is I have a small colony of fungus gnats appearing 😒 #hyacinth #hyacinthus #hyacinthus-orientalis #hyacinthusorientalis #hyacinthusorientaliswoodstock #forcedbulbs #fungus-gnat #pest-fungusgnat #fungusgnat

Yay 💜 Not so good about the fungus gnats though Richard 🤔

Beautiful colour💜. Hate those fungus gnats!

Beautiful Rich .. I’ve had a few gnats too

Wonderful colour 💜

This is absolutely beautiful. How does one describe such sophisticated beauty

I know right? Fortunately I’ve found using yellow sticky traps like this quite effective at breaking the life cycle, as it stops the adults mating and laying new eggs. Takes a few days to notice a difference though 👍🏼 @KOutdoors

I really do! 😣 had an episode a couple of years ago and took me ages to get rid of them, but then discovered cutting up these sticky strips really helpful. Hopefully I can get it under control @gjones

It’s such a lovely deep purple, I’ve always wanted to try this one. Hopefully will plant them outside in the spring. Gnats are a pain aren’t they 🙄 @juliesgarden

Definitely !!

I think you described it perfectly 😄👍🏼 @Sharain

Always loved this one Jeff, and very pleased to now have some! A gift from work @jeatacake

These bulbs were supposed to be in flower by Christmas, but I think I kept them too cool. I moved them to a new spot in the living room and they have finally started to grow #hyacinth #hyacinthus #hyacinthus-orientalis #hyacinthusorientalis #hyacinthusorientaliswoodstock #forcedbulbs

They’re going to look spectacular, Rich 👍😘

Is it silly that I can smell this picture?!? 😉🥰😁

Hopefully 🤞🏼 @jacaranda - I just hope that are the right colour too!

Not at all! I wish I could smell it too but I have a cold right now 🤧. Hoping it will be gone by the time the flowers appear @KariSamuel

I bet they will look beautiful and smell divine Richard 😁

I Hope so Karen 🙂 I’ve only grown Hyacinths outdoors before so will be great to see how these turn out @KOutdoors

Looks like a good start. What is your advice on chilling them to force them to grow?

Morning Richard, I’ve had more success growing them in water this year, grew them as presents. The ones grown in compost fell foul of those dreaded little flies, had to keep them myself, currently outside🙄

Good morning Rich they are beauties. Mine have grown flowered and died back. Hyacinths are so lovely 🤗

Hey Le 👋🏼 the simplest method is to buy already ‘prepared’ or ‘forcing’ hyacinth bulbs from the garden centre or store as these will have been prechilled by the supplier for a set period to encourage them to grow quicker than normal hyacinth bulbs when they are put back at normal room temp. It tricks them into growing. But to do it on a normal bulb, you would have to try chilling it in the fridge (not freezer) for at least I’d say 8-10 weeks, maybe even longer? @kaigia

@kaigia - Le, I think from a few hashtags I’ve found in GT I think Katy might have possibly had a go at chilling beforehand. What’s your advice Katy or did you buy 'prepared' bulbs? @gjones
