Morning all, I’m not working today for a change as I’m injured 🤕, so I’ve had a little time to watch the birdies in the garden. A whopping 32 Goldfinches were feeding in the garden this morning!! You can see their tiny silhouettes on the top of the trees in the photo. 💗💗💗 #goldfinch #goldfinches #sickday #birdwatching #wildlife #birds

It’s that time of year again! 🍃🍃🍃 Finished work at 5ish then decided to prune the Birch when I got home! I must not have done enough gardening this week!!! 😂😂😂 #gardenerslife #birch #pruning #pruningbirch

Oh wow! Am thinking of planting a couple of these, how often do you prune them like this? Is it to keep them from turning into monsters? 😁

That's some serious pruning 😉

Hi Kim @Mikekally I give it a mega prune like this every 2-3 years as I only have a small garden it would get huge. It’s fairly easy to do. They are fantastic trees and give good seasons of interest. You have to prune at this time of year (not in winter) as they can bleed a lot of sap and it can cause the tree to be stunted of even die off.

Thanks @mrsflowerpot we're needing to block the security lights from the house behind. landscapers are recommending two of these but am worried they'd be too tall to manage

My secret to success is only feeding them shelled sunflower seeds and the occasional fat ball. I’ve had up to 28/29 Goldfinches in the garden at once this winter. (nearly every day). I feel so blessed, I’ll send some your way Lottie 👍🏻🐧🐤👍🏻 @Lottie__O #birdfeeding-tip #birdfeedadvice

Oh Wow!! I do get some small birds but also a lot of magpies, black birds and pigeons even though I use seed to attract small birds

7w
comment
mrsflowerpot

Yes we get a lot of wood pigeons and blackbirds and the odd magpie too, that’s why i swapped to the straight husked sunflower seeds cos the little birds don’t tend to throw it everywhere which attracts less of the big birds. @Lottie__O 👍🏻👍🏻

I do the same Beck and am also getting families of long-tailed tits, which I live and rarely see the rest of the year. PS Have you been out with your pan scrubber on the trunks?!

This morning there were a lot of birdies in the garden!! At one count there were 28 Goldfinches, 3 blue tits, 3 Greenfinch, 1 great tit 1 blackbird and a fat garden turkey (aka wood pigeon) no partridge in a pear tree though!Do they know something we don’t?? Me thinks we’ve got some snow heading our way over the next week! #birdwatch #gardenbirds #earlywarning #wildlife #birds

@mrsflowerpot wonderful! Have finally managed to get the #goldfinches so how do we attract #bullfinches?

8w
comment
mrsflowerpot

Hi Hayley @hayleyaj I swear by shelled sunflower seeds as through trial and error have found that they attract the most birds and have the less mess. I buy a big 12.5kg bag and it lasts a good 3 months so it's well worth the investment. I also use red peanuts in a cage and have managed to attract a family of great spotted woodpeckers. If you can site the bird feeds either in or near a tree too. Don't go too tidy with the gardening as well cos they love a bit of chaos!!🐧🐦🐥 #advice #tips #birds

@mrsflowerpot thanks, our sunflower seeds are in the wrong place then! We will move!

8w
comment
mrsflowerpot

It's all trail and error @hayleyaj but that recipe seems to work for me. 'They' always suggest to put out Niger seeds for bullfinches but I tried it and ended up with thistles all over the garden so I gave that idea up as a learning experience 😩
