Are you growing oats for livestock or for yourselves? I have a health condition and hulled barley was recommended so I purchased organic seed and it grew beautifully. However just as it was ready to harvest flocks of birds came in and cleared it out completely 😕
I am trying it for our own consumption, the straw can be goat bedding. I am thinking of using an old mangle, if I can find one, for the processing. @gjones
When we moved to this property, there was an old mangle that had been left in one of the old dilapidated out buildings. Not many mangles around here anymore.
Going to try a small patch of oats to see if these are viable here

A mortar & pestal might do the job, a biggish one 🤔

Yes there are few mangles about. A sign of the times. Just like trying to find good wheels to make a go kart (all buggies, no silver Cross, now)
Not seen a mangle for at least 50 years since I was a kid, nor the sort of go kart you mention. Ah, them were the days! 😏
