I plant them every year as they never grow back. I'm not too sure if this is due to slugs.

@Gardeningian they are in partial shade (east facing) they get the morning sun.

@bizzylizzy position sounds ok its similar to me. They do get eaten by bugs (aphids) so maybe worth giving them a spray. When they die back i put a little bit of straw down which protects them even more.
