Has anyone else grown watermelon vines over cement slab? Any advise? Should I cover the cement with hay or straw or something ? I'm thinking the vines get hot as the afternoon hot N. California sun is on them allllll afternoon and I don't have any melons starting yet?

There's also an apple tree growing in the middle. My 7 year old decided to put the seeds of her apple into the ground. We now have 5 baby apple trees in our front yard. Going to need to move these at some point, soon!
Watermelon plants and our kitty.
@frontyardgardener tiger kitties are my favorites!
Is the watermelon feeding itself through the lattice? Sure looks healthy and eager!

@columbiariver yes! I only ended up with 2 melons. It was my first attempt at growing. I'll try again next summer.
It's a great plant. You've done something right!
Is that one plant? If not, they look crowded.
@mamasan it was 1 vine. It was glorious.
