From Haugesund. With 3 children and a husband who's seemingly constantly away on business, I garden like it could save my life - and it probably does!

Note to self: These will probably appreciate more room next year.

Are you going to leave the root ball intact and just put it in a bigger pot?

No @gjones, it doesn’t look like it, but it is soggier than a swamp, so it would rot if I kept it like this. I’ll dry out the tubers for a week or so, and then I’ll store them in dry soil mixed with perlite or vermiculite. Oh and next year, I’ll divide them into TWO pots. Lesson learned 🤪

Finally! This is the first to open this year. It feels late, but perhaps I just don’t remember.

I just realized cannas might be plants you only need to buy once, and then you're set for life. Meet my 3. Guess it's been a good year!

Very nice! I dug my one plant and found many bulbs too. Now in soil. What are you doing with them now? Inside or out?

I covered them with used potting compost and will keep them in the orangery until spring @columbiariver. It is unheated but never goes below freezing. Do you keep yours outside?

I leave my #canna outside by letting the old, dead leaves act as a blanket over winter

Lucky you @Opuntia. That might work in my area too, but winters are so unpredictable here and with so little snow, a severe frost can do a lot of damage. I might risk it with part of my collection next year.

You two! 😂😂😂 @jacaranda and @jaynehynesburton You'll be happy to know that the entire thing is made of aluminium, so hopefully this fork (and my nose) will stay in one piece.

My cannas still look great when the light filters through them. I'll bring them inside once the weather starts to get colder.

Someone's been taking bites out of my canna leaves. Unless they suddenly decide to take the whole thing, I don't really mind. It kind of looks nice, I think. Crazy???

gjones

Not sure if this would be from slugs or nit but hopefully they don't decide to take more! Do slugs like cannas?

3w

emve

Have no idea @gjones. It might be those small slugs (Deroceras agreste?), but it sort of doesn't look like the slug damage we normally get. I will be sure to rinse off the roots before taking them inside in the fall, just to be on the safe side.

Maybe grasshoppers? Not sure where you live?? It's just, I hate when something finds one of mine and they seem to really live it!!

I don't know about gresshoppers @terrimclaughlin. I remember some small ones from my childhood, but these days they seem rare as I hardly ever see any. As for the cannas, very few of the leaves are affected, and so late in the season it probably won't develop into a huge problem. I will keep an eye on them, though.

They are a bit of work since I need to dig them up and store them indoors over winter, but I decided I needed them...They probably would have liked a lot more sun than they are getting, but at least they get enough water😉 @gjones
