This has me stunned. The original plant flower behind has sent up a flower stem that has the most amazing striped flower. Both are on the one branch but this one must be a sport. Has anyone seen this happen with carnations?
Hi Davy...yes seen this happen a few times...some of the varieties are not as stable as others and may vary in colour sometimes or 'sport' permanently...if the sport is is worth keeping ...cuttings may taken from it and these can be grown on...I grow a variety called 'Baileys celebration' which throws up all kinds of different flowers...most are not worth keeping but odd ones may be better than the original and grown on 👍🙂 thanks Ange @anges
Thank you Ange and Jane and John for your detailed response. @pelly @anges @ukjohnny I have never seen this before and notice there are 3 buds to open on the same stem so it will be interesting to see if they are the same. At the bottom of the stem there are 3 little non flowering shoots so I will try to take cuttings when they are larger. I do not know the name of the original plant and all other flowers are a solid colour. I even believe the scent is stronger on this stripped one.
@Davy ...... Morning David ...... Beautiful photo....... Whetman Pinks of Devon ( 01626 863328 ) may be interested ........ either with advice, or obtaining seeds/cuttings from your plant ....... Good luck ...... please keep us all posted .
