When I'm not on my bike, you'll find me in my organic-ish garden in #Cumbria. Favourite plants? Wisteria, hellebores, paeonies, philadelphus...

Aspidistra elatior

And then there were two. Well three actually but I put two back into the big pot. This was originally from my OH’s grandmother who died in 1983 #heirloom-plant #aspidistra #houseplant #castironplant

Lovely! My friend has the national collection of Aspidistra elaitor cultivars and some others. He’s convinced me to try one so he gifted me a spotty variegated one 😲

What a great friend to have 😊 I knew there were variegated ones but spotty?! I need to check that out 😃 @richard.spicer.7906

There’s quite a few apparently, although the rhs register doesn’t list many yet. I went with him to visit the owner of Crug Farm Nursery in Wales last November and they had sooooo many different forms of Aspidistra 😮 I thought there was only one 😂😂

My friend keeps his outside by the way planted in the ground and in his unheated greenhouse. he’s found they do much better. Quite hardy plants (another fact I didn’t know till he told me!)

I put mine outside on a shady balcony in the summer but wouldn’t risk them in the ground here. It’s not that our winters are very cold but they’re wet...very wet at the moment. Your visit to Crug Farm Nursery must have been fantastic. Another to add to my list of places I want to visit! @richard.spicer.7906

All clean and shiny and back inside. If you think you kill #houseplants I challenge you to kill one of these. They are not called Cast Iron Plants for nothing 😂 #houseplant

I agree, mine is back inside now. I have had it for years and it puts up with all sorts of neglect. Didn't know it is also called Cast Iron plant, very appropriate. I only know it as Aspidistra.

I could probably still kill it! 😬 maybe I should give one a go...

You would have to kill it with love Rachel. They thrive on neglect. We've had ours ages too Jennifer, since we were students - though our first was stolen in a burglary. Seriously. Along with a load of Elvis Costello tapes 😂😂 @euphorbia @rachelbrooks

Wonder how much they flogged them for down the pub..?! 🙄🙈😂 I shouldn't laugh...it's not funny being burgled, but what strange things to take!

Don't worry it made us laugh, especially when we had to spell aspidistra for the Bobbie! We claimed it in our insurance. I think we got £1 per leaf!!! 😂😂😂
