Phone camera can't capture the richness of this red #camellia! ❤️ #winterflowers #evergreen #camellia-japonica #camellia-red #morningdew #dew #winterflowering

I need this! Where did you get it?

@Tara_H It was already in the garden when I got here, it's pretty mature! I will try rooting some cuttings after it flowers, I'd be happy to share if you like 🤗

That would be amazing, if you get some rooted! You're very lucky to get it for free 😁

I've grown to like camellias a lot since taking care of this one. I love the waxy leaves and furry little flower buds! This one is planted very close to a bay tree/bush which had swallowed it last spring. Since cutting the bay back it seems to be happier and promises lots of colour 😊😊😊

Past two years mine have gone to seed. So attempting to grow a plant/tree from seed

Interesting, Kyle, I have always been around them and never have I seen them do that. Yes, grow one from seed. @kyleleonard

Beautiful plant - lovely flowers!

The promise of a pop of bright red in the back garden! 🌹 #camellia #bud #flowerbud #earlyspringblooms

Looking good. Similar stage to my Camellia buds
Looks like we have a few scaly bugs as well as the dark spots on the camellia. Would love any advice on keepin her healthy - my plan was to feed with iron in spring but I might need to thin out the branches and do a thorough neem spray after flowering 😳 #advice-camellia #pest-advice #help
The spots might potentially be a patch of necrotic dead tissue. Quite a few sap sucking pests have a chemical in their mouths which kills off the immediate area around where they have fed, usually non recoverable. The other possibility (can’t quite see here) is that it might be the start of sooty mould, which is a secondary issue to some pests that excrete honeydew.
If the black spots can be wiped off, then likely the sooty mould. If they don’t come off, then probably just little bits of dead leaf tissue. Hopefully if you sort the pests out it will reduce the occurrence of the spots 👍🏼
@richard.spicer.7906 thanks so much for the help!! I did a quick check but couldn't find any black spots that would come off - so thanks for the tip about dead tissue! The plant looks mostly shiny and healthy otherwise, despite the bay laurel trying to swallow it and likely contributing to the scale issue 😅 Whoever planted this garden will hear it from me haha
😆😆
I'm fighting mealy bugs right now, my plants are quarantined and getting regular neem treatments. On my Hawaiian Ti plants.
