Swapped a north facing garden in Stirlingshire for something a bit more rural (and a bit sunnier) in Clackmannanshire in April 2021.

@ukjohnny Definitely the oddest plant in the garden - in a nice way.

2 weeks on @columbiariver and it's sprouted. We've had bright days but April was chilly and very dry. Hasn't stopped it's progress, mind you!

They have great colour and their formation reminds me of birds wings/feathers!

I hadn't thought of that @gjones but now you mention it, that's exactly what it looks like.

I can't decide whether this plant will a) grow into a fluffy purple cloud like it did last year or b) capture me and take me to its leader 👽

It does brilliantly in some shade but even in its first year (last year) I had to tie it in a bit. I'm not sure what to expect this year as it's in a slightly less shaded spot. I do like it though. I'll take some pics in a couple of weeks and you can see what you think, Laura @columbiariver

Thanks Suzy. I'm thinking of using some in a kind of open wooded spot. I was thrilled to see yours as I'm still deciding. Thank you!

5w

@jeatacake mine is going over now. I'm just leaving it to do its own thing and see where it self seeds (if anywhere!)

5w

@suzyw mine will be close behind yours. Got mine in early 2014 & this is the third year of flowering but no self seeding that I am aware of, although the number of flower shoots has doubled each year!

Slow growing, apparently! The shoots only appeared about 6 weeks ago. Right plant, right place perhaps?

@suzyw Mine are the same and it self seeded itself. So it picked its own locations lol. Reckon another couple of weeks before mine will actually open 🌸

@trina Plants that pick their own locations are very welcome in my garden 😉 I think this is the plant I'm most excited about.

Isn't rue a cat deterrent? I have a feline visitor that insists on ripping up seedlings in my raised bed, before adding it's own brand of manure. I'm told it's not polite to shoot them?!?!

5w
comment
suzyw

@slugslayer I just googled that and you're quite correct (about it being a deterrent, not about shooting them - I'll leave that choice to you 😉). My neighbour's cat prefers my front garden as a W.C.

@slugslayer either that or it's some sort of dirty protest at my gardening abilities...
