This is the third year in my garden, - still finding surprises and fighting with ivy - which grows as quickly as everything else @shascreenplay

Sometimes rose buds develop fungal disease in wet weather and don't open on their own but if you take the outermost petals off it will be as good as new 😊

35w
comment
rbetts25

Yes, mine do that. I find it doesn’t effect all of them and the ones not effected open normally. That’s a good tip though @ublaszko I’ll give that a go!

35w
comment
richard.spicer.7906

Oh what a shame ☹️ - It’s not a fungal disease, but instead a disorder called Rose Balling. In wet cool weather, the outer petals can’t dry off quickly enough before getting scorched by sun and they go stiff preventing the bud from opening properly. It then just dies unfortunately. If left, it might go on to develop botrytis, but initially it’s not caused by any pathogen, only wet weather or getting water on buds when watering. Usually you should cut them off when this happens to prevent dieback

35w
comment
richard.spicer.7906

Sometimes you can peel off the outer layer, but to be honest you have to catch them quick #roseballing - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=627

Yes, it's a hybrid tea rose 👍 It has one flower at the end of each stem but it's a repeat flowering rose so it will flower again in late summer. It also has very large flowerheads compared to other roses. I was looking at pictures of mine a few weeks back and noticed the flowerheads were larger than allium sensation 💖

2w
comment
cyndi

You have to train the branches to grow how you want them. Use gloves and very carefully push them in and out the holes/slots of the arbor. You can use twine to hold in place till gets longer to train more of it.

2w
comment
sharonhayden

@cyndi thank you! It has massive spikes and thick branches- shall I do it after it flowers?

2w
comment
cyndi

You can work on it a little at a time and if theres a flower just wait till it dies off dead head it and work the branch very careful tho so wont break. Use leather gloves so wont hurt your hands. Dead heading them keeps them tidy and incourages new growth as well. And welcome.
