My largest cabbage, Carole - it's called 'Primo' - does say it's a summer cabbage which can be harvested between June and September, but the heart doesn't seem very big - they all have a lot of outer leaves (holey ones at that! 😬) @carolecuttingitfine #gyo #cabbage
I have been eating some of the outer leaves they are really tasty but i leave most of the outer for the snails so that they leave the heart alone which should get bigger over the next 2 weeks Rachel but watch out for white butterfly eggs and scrape them off before they hatch into hungry caterpillar 🐛
Was just going to write an essay then read what @linfoster had written, she's summed it all up! 😊 you can throw fleece over it secured down to avoid the dreaded caterpillar 🐛 🐛 I cover summer brassicas but not winter ones like sprouts.. I think I'm ok with being named after a cabbage @Jasonsparkes1 ?! I've been called worse 😂😂😂
Thanks girls - I did wonder if you could eat the outer leaves but funnily enough I thought I'd leave them for the same reason Lin. I'll leave them a little while longer then 👍🏼 and despite having the net over them from the moment I sowed them I still saw a cabbage white get in there the other day! 🙄 and maybe I'd better get some of the fleece then Carole 👍🏼 I did intend to replace the net/cage but just didn't get round to it 🙄Do you cover all your veg? @linfoster @carolecuttingitfine
Oh it would Sue! 👍🏼 and most definitely - it wouldn't be the same without them and then in the bubble and squeak on Boxing Day! 😋 @susanhumphrey333 it's funny how we don't eat them much throughout the rest of the year...
I used to have a net cage over mine when i had my allotment Rachel as i wasn't there every day only to water but now I grow everything at home i dont net i just check over every other day and it seems to be sufficient.
