Gardening is like cooking. To improve, you need to be willing to make mistakes and experiment. Also, common names are garbage. Zone 9b, West Sac, CA.

Male valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa sonorina) visiting my African blue basil (Ocimum kilimandscharicum × basilicum 'Dark Opal'). Being a hybrid, the plant is sterile. It is, however, one of the few basil varieties that are perennial. I planted this one last year and it survived our mild winter.

I got this #Africanbluebasil because it was highly recommended as a #pollinatorfriendly plant. I was not disappointed. And neither are the bees, wasps, hoverflies, and other pollinators who come to feast on its nectar. This is one of the few #perennial #basil varieties. It is, however, a #sterile #hybrid -- a cross between #camphorbasil and #darkopalbasil. Although unable to produce seeds of their own, they may be propagated via cuttings. 15July2020
