Does anyone have any idea what has got to my hydrangea please? So upset about this. It’s in a pot and has been very well for a few years

Has this just happened Lesley? 🤔 If it's old damage it's likely to have been the late frosts we had. If it's recent it could be that it dried out in the heatwave we've just had, they like plenty of water. Try scraping a bit of the stem near the bottom. If it's showing green it's still alive, if not unfortunately it's dead.

@pelly thank you so much for replying. I noticed it a while back and thought it may recover. Gave it a good water and feed and mulch but no joy ☹️. I will have a pray and check the stem later 🤗 x

Let me know what you find. If it's been like it a while the frosts are the most likely reason. I lost one too and one of my others was damaged but luckily it survived 👍

It could also be the dreaded vine weevil grub 😡 give the stem a gentle pull if it feels loose then I’d tip it out onto a tray and have a good look through the soil, you won’t miss them, although it may just be an idea to do that anyway, good luck.

@sieveheadsarah thank you. I did find those horrible things in my garden and used some solution which doesn’t really seem to have worked 😕

Hopefully you won’t find any in the hydrangea Lesley, I can guarantee I’ll find them in several of my pots every year, I’ve also tried the nematodes but didn’t think they did anything.

@pelly @sieveheadsarah hi girls just to let you know that I scraped some of the stem near the bottom of the stem and it is green 😀 so I have given it a good trim and will leave it out of sight and see what occurs in the future. Thanks everyone 🙏

That's great news. Hopefully next year it will be back with avengence. Don't forget to keep it watered though 😍
