@gardentagsplantsteam @teamgardentags - Can the differences between sider cactus & spider cactus be sorted out in the encyclopedia please? There seems to be much confusion. G. Horstii has always been a spider cactus in our encyclopedia. @emch added a separate encyclopedia entry for sider cactus, but now it appears to be a duplicate in scientific naming. Please help?
It gets worse @KariSamuel; Spider cactus is variously categorized on the Net as G. denudatum and as G. baldianum. G. horstii is called that in one or two places but is usually called Sider, not Spider. I didn't have the stamina to read every single reference out there but I was immediately suspicious that Wikipedia lists horstii as Spider Cactus. They are no slaves to accuracy at Wikipedia...
Yes, I was finding that out myself! Normally, I trust & use Wikipedia quite frequently! It may never be completely clear & concise, but maybe better managed? I know many, many of the pictures in the spider cactus link are most likely siders... one small step at a time! We will see what the experts can do to get it sorted better! @emch
Hi Kari/Eileen - happy to have a look. As I’m sure you both understand, same common names can apply to more than one species (and can be different in different countries) hence why they are always at a disadvantage when compared to the Latin names. Yet every Latin name should only really be entered into the encyclopaedia once, but it seems there are three entries for this specific plant (two of which created by @emch and are not necessary). @KariSamuel
