Our creative adventure began in 1999, a new house and a bare plot. We were part of the NGS family for 10 years. Now we’re sitting back and relaxing!

The only one of my three ‘Hot Lips’ to survive the winter! ❤️ I took a chance and pruned it quite hard in March and it now seems to be all the better for it. ❤️ #salvia #salvia-hotlips #redandgreen #jacarandaislandbed #mygardentoday 💚

One of my favourite plants! I lost one two winters ago. Happy that I had taken cuttings.

Glad it’s come back for you, lovely shrub you have. I didn’t realise these were fragile, we used to have a holiday home in wales and had a few there, they thrived and did really well without much attention at all, where we were did have a little micro climate though so maybe that helped, I’m wanting to add some to our home garden so glad I read your post to know where to plant them to be protected. Love these shrubs and their displays. 🌸🌺

@jamesdep this one is in a flower bed in the north-east facing part of the garden. Although it’s on the edge of the bed it’s surrounded by larger shrubs which seem to have given it the protection it needs. 👍😘

I thought mine was bomb proof, it's been romping on happily for several years with very little interference from me. But sadly this winter it spilt in two and didn't come back after a hard prune 😕 @jacaranda

Sadly I don’t think they’re long-lived plants, Emma. 😢 @ejonesy

Advice please! I dug up a large salvia in early spring as it was showing no signs of life but one piece had a bit of root so I potted it up. It produced a few shoots at the bottom, which died off, but the top is now doing well, as you can see. My question is do I reduce the top growth by half, to make it bushier, or do I cut the whole lot off so that it shoots again from lower down? At the moment I appear to have a standard salvia! #plantadvice #salvia #salvia-hotlips

Carol Klein did a great segment about salvias on last week’s GW, although she didn’t mention ‘Hot Lips’. Perhaps it’s not one of her favourites! #salvia #salvia-hotlips #redandwhite #mygardentoday 01/10/2018

Yes Barbara lots of experience with this little lady😘 trim lightly now to reduce height and prevent wind rock over winter, but keep as much as possible to protect the crown over winter, i then cut back by a half to two thirds in Early - mid April and off she goes again 😀 the bits you cut off now can be popped in a pot of compost as insurance policies they take like a dream .. hope that helps @jpea @lilybee

I tend to cut back a bit in autumn to tidy the plant up then hard prune in the spring, I my mentality I think the more growth on top can help protect the base a bit over winter @jacaranda @lilybee @jpea

I always just trim off bits that make the plant look untidy...as and when ☺️
