HELP! I think my Ethiopian Banana is dead 😢😢 It’s been in an unheated greenhouse all winter so is this the end? @vec @porto

Have you tried to repot it have you checked the root system if it is dead or still alive.

Doesn't look dead to me but an unheated greenhouse isn't ideal, needs to be kept above 5° If there's no leaf emerging, cut it down a couple of inches and see what the inner circle looks like. If it's mushy, it's likely dead but keep cutting down until you see solid growth if there's any. If it's any consolation, I've lost my biggest one in a heated greenhouse

Actually looking at it closer (I've screenshot it to zoom in) undo that brown leaf at the top, it should peel off bit by bit and that leaf may well then unfold

Same as @vec 👍 think you just can tell in the overall look of the plant as if in if it looks plump with water overall & yes check the top for new growth by slightly peeling back. As stated im no banana expect but mine done well this winter indoors 👍.. mines be out for a good couple of weeks now, I cut back all the winter leaves & have been watering everyday and feeding one a week. But unfortunately the strong heavy winds I had here in Hertfordshire in the last couple of days absolutely...

Absolutely destroyed the new foliage coming through! So I won't dare upload a photo at this moment 🙄.. would be a shame because I put a lot of care and effort over winter to lose it 😥 fingers crossed for both of us @jacaranda I did re pot mine 👍

It would make a nice sculpture though 😆

Thanks Julie and David. I’ve undone the top leaf as you suggested, Julie, and there’s some green!!! A new photo will follow. @vec @porto

Do you think yours will be ok, David? I’ll keep everything crossed for you 🤞😘 @porto

If there's green, start feeding and watering. Keep it out of direct sunlight until it adjusts to the light levels

I don’t have many #exotics in my garden but this one is the biggest and the best! #ensete #musa #tropical #banana #containergarden #mygardentoday 03/09/2019

Wow that’s gorgeous 💚

Advice please @richard.spicer.7906 @vec This is my plant, bought last year. It’s been in the greenhouse all winter and it’s now putting on new growth. Should I cut the left hand leaf off? How often should I feed it and with what? Thank you 😘😘 #ensete #containergarden #exotic

No don't cut it off til you get at least one more leaf open. Those new leaves will probably burn when it's first outside as it adjusts to the light levels. It needs as much leaf as possible to photosynthesise. It's greedy, they like lots of water, horse manure, tomato food, chicken pellets, grow more etc etc think you get the picture 😂 Bananas are greedy and thirsty

Ps it will grow much bigger in the ground

Thanks Julie. I don’t have anywhere in the garden to plant it so I’ll leave it in the pot. At least then I can move it around. 👍😘 @vec

Some sound advice already there from Julie, I think we just got to keep feeding them Barbara 🤣

I suppose I’ll have to cut this back now, but do I chop it right down or just trim back the dead leaves? Advice please @vec @porto @richard.spicer.7906 #ensete #plantadvice

Trim back the dead leaves. When it first goes back outside the first set of new leaves will get damaged by the sun. Don't worry it will just be adjusting to the sun and light levels

Thanks Julie. It was lovely last year so I really want to look after it! 😍👍😘 @vec

Great advice @vec 👍😍

Sounds like the best advice above from Julie 👍🏼 - gonna bring mine out of the darkness this week and pop it in the polytunnel for a few weeks. It’s looking great having spent winter in the garage.

@richard.spicer.7906 mine have done well in pots in the greenhouse and are still slowly growing. I've managed to lose my Cavendish banana though as it was sitting at the back of the greenhouse in a tray that had water in it.... Good job they are cheap to replace 😏

Oh no, that’s a shame 😕 and yes good job they are not to pricey! I think I picked up my ensete at GW live last year at a reasonable price @vec

I’ve gone tropical! I’ve never been interested in #exotics but I was given a canna earlier this year and now I’m hooked! #ensete #abyssinianbanana #redandgreen #containergarden #mygardentoday 25/08/2018

Oh dear .... it's a downward spiral 😂😂😂

Seriously though it's becoming more mainstream and more accessible to people and I think that's fab 😍

I'd better tag you before @porto does 😃 #thebananagang

I didn’t know there was a banana gang, Julie! I’m honoured to be part of it 😂😂 @vec

It looks lush 😍👏
I’ve taken Julie’s advice and unfurled part of the top leaf. Yeah, there’s some green 💚 Now what do I do? 😳 This gardening malarkey’s a real challenge sometimes but it’s fun!!! @vec
Just answered on your other post 😉
Mines still in the greenhouse but growing well. I’ve had her out in the sunshine and have lots of new leaves coming through. Still too early to plant out yet though 😁
Woohoo 🎉🎉🎉
There you go! Nice one 👌🌿🍌🍌🌿😉
