On Tuesday, when the garden visitors were here, this courgette was about 6ins long. Yesterday was wet, windy and wild so I stayed indoors. By this morning it had turned into a monster!!! #courgette #gyo #monsterveg #mygardentoday

Advice please! Why do some of my #courgette flowers not produce courgettes? And should I cut off the long stems once the courgette flower has fallen off? The courgettes that do grow are great and very tasty but I'd like more!!! #gyo #plantadvice @marksaunders @cassie26 @allotmentalice
On a courgette you get two different types of flowers - the male and the female. Early in the season the plant will produce lots of male flowers (which bear no fruit) and then female flowers will start to appear - these will have a distinctive 'swelling' behind the flowers - this is the courgette. The male flowers will be produced throughout the season, and once the female flowers are pollinated feel free to pick the male flower!
Full sun, plenty of airflow, even lots of water if you must but most of all - more plants. Caroline is exactly right and keep picking every other day, even if you don't need them. That way they should keep going till late sept.
Yes its just the male v female thing , happens with cucumbers too !!! When the foliage gets too big you can clear it away as with tomatoes.

Remove the foliage when it gets too big,.. @rosiepetzold what exactly does that mean? (I'm talking cucumbers) I know it sounds obvious, but this is my first year for cuckes and tomatoes and any trick is helpful.
I think @rosiepetzold means that when the cucumber foliage gets too big it can be removed. Is that correct @marksaunders ? I don't grow cucumbers myself so I can't be sure! @lesliecole49
Never felt the need to remove cucurbit foliage myself but would say start from the bottom leaves removing upwards. Its not neccesary on Tomatoes either unless you are growing them more than 8 ft high. 'Some' foliage removal can possibly be benficial in respect to air flow/disease reduction as well as making it easier to deal with whitefly. We are currently growin and indeed harvesting an outdoor cucumber called Burpless Tasty Green which is laying on the ground and very easy to grow.
