So I come home this afternoon and tell my girlfriend I got the begonia she wanted. She takes one look and says "Sweety, I love you (that's when you know you screwed up) but that's a bromeliad." 😑 I think it's a sweet plant anyway, I'm naming him George and he's gonna sit on my desk with my roses.
It's a gorgeous plant. They bloom for a long time. When they're done blooming, the mother plant will die but before she does she'll produce babies at the soil level. You repot these and the cycle continues. Bromeliads benefit from frequent spritzing (especially in our dry Cdn winters). They like lots of indirect bright sunlight. Keep the well in the middle filled with water or it will die.
I guess I do! There's a bright side to everything. Carrying for bromeliads sounds intimidating! It's a good thing you told me all this. When I first showed an interest in plants my mom got me a cactus. Turns out that when I was 17 I was less nurturing than the dessert. 😑 Then my sisters teased me that guys just aren't caring enough to raise a plant. This would have put me right back there, watching George die and not knowing it was all part of the natural cycle of things. Thanks! 😉
