From Haugesund. With 3 children and a husband who's seemingly constantly away on business, I garden like it could save my life - and it probably does!

These days there are a lot of imperfections to look past, but there is beauty coming through. More and more each day. Go spring!

This is one of my favourite hellebores. It is also one of the earliest, so I try to protect the flowers under a cloche during cold spells.

They're lovely! Looks like snow is gone now and the sun is shining. What are your temps like now? Here it's about +2 to +5C in daytime and -5 to -7 over night. Sun has lots of warmth now and we have 12 1/2 hrs of daylight. Had a storm move thru yesterday but looks like that's the end of the snow.😊

We have the same daytime temps @gjones, but no frost for about three nights in a row now. Such a difference that makes - little green tips are appearing everywhere! We're supposed to get sub-zero nights again this coming week though, but they are promising sunny days.

The thing about cold spells around here, is that's usually when we get clear skies and sunshine. I don't want my hellebore to cook, so I wedged the dome slightly open to let some air in. Hopefully I'll remember to close it again 😅

It is supposed to be minus 12 celsius in the next few days, and that is highly unusual around here. I just couldn't risk the blooms on this hellebore. The plant can easily take the cold, but near-open buds like these will most likely suffer.

It's a great way to save plants. I've noticed a winter pattern of weather which seems to affect both of us. When our temps warm up yours cool down. Right now and for the next two weeks, our temps are forecast to be above average (zero and above, which were enjoying) and northern Europe seems to be experiencing cold wet weather.

Seems like we're connected @gjones! They say our arctic cold right now is coming from Sibiria, so perhaps it is pushing our usual weather pattern your way?

I like to think I'm giving select plants the "fairytale treatment" @columbiariver. Never tested it in such temperatures, though - hope the glass holds!

I THINK this is painted bunting, it is either this one or its neighbor (the birds dislodged the tag) 😂

That's almost there-the sunshine looks wonderful. We have lots of sunshine but it's still cold here. Forecast says were finally in for a warm up next week - can't wait😊

How cold is cold for you this time of year @gjones? Just above freezing here, but the extra light feels wonderful!

Well it's way below our average winter temp. This morning it was -28C! But by Saturday, it's forecast to be -3C and it looks like it's supposed to stay like that right into spring. Right now we get 10 hrs 24 mins of sunlight and it feels warm shining thru the windows but a cold air front is sitting over us so it feels bitter outside.

I'm sure I asked you this before but can't remember: what growing zone are you in. I remember you get the warmth from the Gulf Stream so even though you're north, you get fairly mild winters. When your agave get big you'll probably be able to leave them outside year round!

3w

European zone 2 I think. I wouldn't want to risk it if my agave actually survives to that size, but it could work, especially if protected from too much moisture. @gjones

@emve it didn't seem right that you'd be a zone 2 so we looked it up for you. You would be a european zone 6 or 7 depending on how close you are to North Sea. A European zone 2 would be a zone or two colder than us.!😨

I couldn't find the link right now, but I do seem to remember that usda zones and the Norwegian ones are more or less opposite. Perhaps I was stretching the truth a bit when I said European, sorry about that. In Norway, zone 1 is the warmest, so yes my area would probably be about usda zone 6. This is very confusing! @gjones

That makes more sense but yes confusing!

Yes, I believe Lenten rose is the common name for Helleborus orientalis. @gjones

@gjones I see now that the GT encyclopedia has the name Lanten rose, I don't know if that is mis-spelled or a name that is also used.

@gjones the plant itself is fine, and I am happy to see there are more flowers forming. Next time though, I will bring any tall flowers indoors to enjoy in a vase while the rest of the plant rides out the cold spell under cover. Live and learn.
