#cleaning #seedharvest #luffa-seeds I keep getting told #loofa is so hard to peel.. it's just not if its dry all the way. Shake well to loosen seeds then push fingers into skins peel away. Remove #seeds they have a skin on them so shake them about or rub them and go outside and gently blow the skins away. Make sure dried well and then label/store. Wash the sponges well and let air dry completely.

@cyndi here in Vermont I will have to start them early inside but that’s not a problem from about January on my any flat surface I can steal has flats on it. Lol!

5w
comment
cyndi

Def will need to start early also when you plant in large pot or in ground outside dont disturbed the roots when you transplant them. Remember full sun is vital for them. And grow on a trellis they can get large. If growing for the sponges leave on plant till brown and dry feeling.. shake them to know if really ready the seeds will rattle. @charyl best wishes

I live in Georgia USA .its super hot and humid and luffa needs heat and lots of it they take a long time to mature so need full sun and trellised i trully don't see why they wouldn't do well for you! @referee101 theres people in subtropics of Australia that are growing them that I know of. Pretty easy . you can you tube growing loofa in .."and your country" ..to see if others have as well. It never hurts to try. So many of us grow things we are told "that won't grow there" and we beat the odds😁

So jealous! I have tried loofah where I live but without a green house I haven't has luck they require a longer summer season than I get :-(. You should of seen how exciting I was to find out they are an edible gourd (even tiny) and not some kind of sea sponge. BUT, Not as amazed when i realized the way pineapple grow hahaha.

Wow idk what I was expecting luffas to look like on the vine, but this is not what I was expecting! I’ve only ever seen them dry. Is it super light weight? Or are they watery before you dry them? I wanna grow some so bad!

1w

cyndi

It doesn't feel heavy right now Lauren @ohhyouknow when the gourds are small they are edible as well. This will take a while before its def ready and will take a while to dry as well. If it makes it I'll share a few seeds with ya. Takes a long time to grow and needs a trellis in full sun.

1w

You def are now. Makes the skin feel good Jeff @jeatacake should buy yourself a small one. If ya decide you dont like it they do make good scrubbies for kitchen and hand washing to get excessive grime off hands. Just cut smaller pieces off. I use to have one on a fishing line outside in shed with some soap for scrubbing b4 i came inside lol

If I get to see one then I might give it a try. Don't think there's much chance if growing one here, that's for sure! 😕

1w
comment
cyndi

They do take an awful long time to grow Jeff @jeatacake I do know I saw links for growing it in UK. You prob could do it in your greenhouse for sure. Heat it up some before last of the cold start them on heating pads in a larger size container(wrapped around sides) and put a support for them to grow up. Come spring/summer it should be more than warm enough in there to keep them going till done.

Thanks Cyndi, but I think before I go to all that trouble, I'll buy one first to see if I still don't like them 😀

I know people up north can grow them. I bet if you started them in a decent size pot in green house or indoors then placed container in full sun with a trellis or arbor after last freeze they would do well for as well Laura @columbiariver they do take a long time to grow to luffa sponge size. It would be almost winter by time ready for you but you could dry them in a garage or shed then. If i can get these to grow all way and make a few ill send ya one lol xoxo
