Achimenes heterophylla 'Sun Wind'

Hot Water Plant 'Sun Wind'

Achimenes, known as ‘Hot Water Plants’, because it was thought that watering with warm water promotes flowering, has many varieties, with flower colours ranging from white to deep red. The leaves are downy, and the flowers funnel-shaped with 5 rounded petals. Often grown as house-plants as they need a minimum temperature of 10 deg.C. The plant goes dormant in Winter. 'Sun Wind has very pretty pale pink petals with a darker pink round the edges.

Flowering

From Early Spring TO Early Autumn

Flowers appear in early Summer. Each flower only lasts a few days, but are followed by more, and blooming will occur all through Summer and into Autumn.

Propagating by cuttings

From Early Summer TO Early Summer

Take 3 in (8 cm) stem tip cuttings in early Summer. Cut off a 3"-6" healthy section of stem, and insert into a pot of compost.

Planting

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

Plant rhizome in suitable compost - equal parts peat moss, coarse sand or perlite, and vermiculite works well. Keep in a well-lit warm place out of direct sunlight.
